Bill Cone studied fine art and commercial illustration at San Francisco State, and the Art Center College of Design. After working as a commercial illustrator for many years, he began working for Pixar Animation Studios as a set designer on Toy Story, going on to subsequent projects as a Production Designer for A Bugs Life, Toy Story 2, and Cars. While working on 'A Bug's Life' he began using pastels to do lighting studies, inspired by Ralph Eggleston's pastel work on Toy Story. Realizing pastel's inherent benefits of speed and portability, he began taking them outside to do lighting studies on the way to work, weekends, and vacations in the Pacific Northwest and Canada. Working outdoors began to influence Cone's understanding of light and color relationships, which have affected his work in films. Ten years later he is still pursuing this process of integrating his experiences in nature with film work.
Cone has exhibited at several of the Pastel Society of the West Coast annual juried shows. His pastel work for Pixar has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, and other venues around the world, as part of the 'Art of Pixar' show. For the last 2 years he has organized painting pack trips into the Sierra Nevada wilderness with fellow artists. Finding a voice as well as a community is an ongoing process.
"Natural light has such an extraordinary range of complexity and subtlety,
that it is truly a bottomless well of inspiration for any artist that has gone
outside to work. To capture even a fraction of those qualities in an image is
a worthy goal. "
